About the project

Wornington Green, Kensington and Chelsea

The Wornington Green Estate in Ladbroke Grove, London W10 is an award-winning regeneration project. The area itself is fascinating historically and culturally. It has the largest Moroccan population in the UK and the annual Notting Hill Carnival parade passes close by the estate. One of the first adventure playgrounds, (Notting Hill Adventure Playground) founded in 1959, is also sited on the estate.

NewmanFrancis previously provide an Independent Tenants’ Advice Service for Catalyst tenants. Our role is to work with the residents making sure they have a voice and can influence what happens with the regeneration.

Our Involvement

There are a number of strands to the service we provide. We provide support to the Resident Steering Group (RSG); carry out regular outreach work on the estate; provide independent advice and advocacy service; facilitate regular public meetings, and provide training for residents. The aim is to get more residents involved and help influence what happens on Wornington Green as the regeneration progresses.

By demonstrating that residents can have real influence over what happens in their neighbourhood, NewmanFrancis has helped change some of the negative perceptions of the Wornington Green regeneration. Residents now seem more positive about the changes that are taking place and more residents are saying that they can play an active part in what happens on Wornington Green. As the project moves into its final phase, we aim to continue this progress and support all Wornington Green residents.

Working with the RSG

The RSG is a well-engaged, lively and committed group dedicated to supporting Wornington Green residents through the regeneration process and building a strong community with both existing and new residents. NewmanFrancis will be supporting the RSG in a number of ways, such as: training sessions; facilitation of meetings; administration support; advocating and conversing with Catalyst on their behalf, etc.

  • NewmanFrancis helped the RSG develop its own Action Plan, to prioritise what was important to residents.
  • The RSG has worked with Catalyst to develop a set of Neighbourhood Rules
  • We also worked with the RSG to set up a Design Group which worked for 5 months with the architects on the detailed designs for Phase 2. Residents received training in order to work with the architects during the design process.
  • The RSG supported and influenced the appointment of Conran & Partners as the architects for Phase 2 of the regeneration.
  • The RSG were a key part of the procurement process for the construction contractor for Phase 2.
  • Members join NewmanFrancis staff on outreach to get views of residents
  • The RSG have been residents’ eyes and ears on estate management
  • The RSG keep residents informed through regular public meetings
  • As an ongoing task, the RSG monitor the residents’ charter (this is the regeneration agreement) to ensure Catalyst are keeping to this agreement

We will continue to support this group as it moves forward with its aims and ambitions.

Outreach and residents' issues

A key part of our involvement is our regular outreach sessions. This is where we get out on the estate and talk to people – we keep them informed with the project’s progress; we listen to their concerns and questions; we can take up issues and represent them to Catalyst on their behalf.

We also provide an independent advice and advocacy service to residents on issues around the regeneration. We’ve helped residents get answers from Catalyst to outstanding questions; advanced complaints to Catalyst and helped get resolutions; and supported people through the difficult time of moving home. Residents feel confident to come and talk to us, knowing they’ll get a helpful and professional response.

Public meetings

Every quarter we arrange a meeting with the RSG for all residents to attend (compared to the RSG meetings which are for committee members). These meetings are very useful in informing and engaging residents. Previously, we have arranged for a number of speakers to address the meetings including a member of the Kensington and Chelsea Council Parks Department; Catalyst’s Regeneration Manager, and the Area Manager; speakers from Catalyst Gateway; and from the local community centre, the Venture Centre.
